9 best places for Sunday lunch in Edinburgh
The perfect Sunday features a lie-in, a slow read of the papers, maybe a leisurely walk... and most definitely a roast. As such, here's our round-up of the top Edinburgh places doing the hallowed Sunday roast lunch right.
A bottomless black hole of deliciousness... One Square
An endless buffet of Sunday roast delights, One Square's options include (but are certainly not limited to) chicken liver parfait with mandarin gel, truffle and cauliflower creme brulee, roasted Orkney sirloin of beef with Yorkshire puddings, caramilsed onions & thyme, loads of salad (felt obliged to mention that) and - a personal favourite - honey-roasted parsnips. That's but a drop in an ocean of endless gravy. Going for £29 per person, granted, it's not the cheapest - but, this an event. Go hungry and you'll have a Sunday lunch you won't soon forget.

For Sunday lunch with a view... Twenty Princes Street
Overlooking Edinburgh's Old Town, the relaxing surrounds of Twenty Princes Street set the scene for a mouth-watering three-course Sunday lunch feast that's as concerned with provenance as it is with perfection. Succulent beef from John Gilmour Butchers is accompanied by all the trimmings and an indulgent choice of sides if you so wish. Just make sure to leave enough space for dessert and peruse the extensive wine list.
Available every Sunday from noon. To book Tel: 0131 652 7370 or visit twentyprincesstreet.co.uk
For the perfect cut... Chop House
With a bespoke cocktail menu and an achingly cool décor of steel, pared-back brick, stylish lighting and plush leather, Chop House has fast become both the place to eat and the place to be seen - even if you're nursing a Sunday hangover. Excellent cuts of beef are cooked over an open charcoal grill and served with bone marrow gravy, roasters, heritage carrot, butter greens and a Yorkshire pudding. Everything that a roast should be.
£19.50 per person. To book visit chophousesteak.co.uk
Traditional done to perfection... The Broughton
'When it's done, it's done'. So it says on the menu, that's how you know The Broughton takes Sunday lunch seriously - no re-heated nonsense here. They've distilled the essence of the classic Sunday roast down to two heart-wrenching options: George Bowers of Stockbridge roast aged beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, glazed carrot, green beans and gravy (£17.5) and roast loin of Ayrshire pork, roast potatoes, crispy crackling, kale, glazed carrot & apple sauce (£16). We suggest you get both (as pictured). Not even joking.

For the roasted meat obsessive... The Sheep Heid Inn
Why choose one when you could have them all with the trio of roasts? Sirloin of beef, pork and chicken with crackling and stuffing wrapped in bacon. Served with all the trimmings & bottomless gravy for a very reasonable £16.95 per head.

For a classy Sunday lunch... Brasserie Prince
If Sunday lunch is sacrosanct to you (as it should be), then the grandiose surrounds of an Edinburgh icon by way of The Balmoral is a fitting arena for a meeting of meat and gravy. Except, this Brasserie Prince by Alain Roux, so expect a decided elevation of this classic paradigm (although, still super reasonably priced at £19.50 for two courses or three courses for £24.95). Start with venue favourites including Grandpa Benoît Roux’s country pâté or Normandy onion soup and follow with roast beef, roast chicken or roast lamb served with all the trimmings. Finish with classic French cheese or a selection of desserts including the signature apple Tart Tatin.

Bonus: If you're in Glasgow with a pal... The Butchershop Bar & Grill
Yip, it says Edinburgh in the title. It's right there. But, we love bonus inclusions and it felt a bit criminal to not include The Buthershop as it's practically worth jumping on a train west just to try. Take a hungry pal and try 35 day dry aged roast tafelspitz (loosely translated as ‘tip of meat for the table’, in this case it’s rump; the tip from the sirloin) for two people to share, £42. Cooked medium rare, it’s carved at the table and served with pillowy Yorkshire puddings, roast spuds, horseradish and gravy. Sunday lunch bliss.
