The best walks in Edinburgh and Glasgow
We put our heads together to give you some of our favourite places to go a-wandering. Here are some of the best walks in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Edinburgh
River Almond Walkway
Suggested starting point: Cramond Glebe EH4 6JN
How long: around 5 miles
What’s en route? Not strictly on the walk itself, but The Cramond Inn is perfectly placed nearby for a post-walk congratulatory beer.
Union Canal Walk
Suggested starting point: Behind Akva on Fountainbridge EH3 9QV
How long: The total length is around 32 miles and finishes in Falkirk, so if you’re up for a long walk you can fill your boots.
What’s en route? Fuel up at Akva before you set off, and if you get far enough you can pop into Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho for a spot of bouldering.
Water of Leith Walkway: Stockbridge to Gallery of Modern Art
Suggested starting point: End of Saunders Street EH3 6TQ
How long: Just under 3 miles
What’s en route? The Dean Village is plenty pretty for Insta-worthy photo stops along the way.
Glasgow
Southern Necropolis Trail
Suggested starting point: Caledonia Road G5 0JX
How long: Roughly an hour and a half but longer if you want to fully investigate some of the monuments and memorials.
What’s en route? It’s a residential area so you’ll find plenty of shops for supplies and after the trail you can visit the close at hand Glasgow Cathedral and St Mungo’s Museum or Drygate brewery – whichever is your persuasion.
Kelvin Walkway: Clydeside to Maryhill
Suggested starting point: SECC, then follow the Clyde down river.
How long: Around 5 miles
What’s en route? The Tall Ship, the Riverside Museum, Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, Glasgow University, the Botanic Gardens…you’re unlikely to get bored of the view.
