Celebrity nutritionist Amanda Hamilton on self-confidence and trusting her gut

3 Mins

Scotland’s own celebrity nutritionist, Amanda Hamilton, talks to i-on about her career, self-confidence and how she feels about getting older.

Your onscreen style is self-assured and confident. Have you always been like that?

I’ve always had self-belief, but in my early twenties I didn’t have the confidence to talk back. When I started in television I was told how to dress, how to cut my hair. Now I’m secure enough to choose what’s important and what’s not, and really live by my core values. Confidence is not something that can be faked. I’ve never felt more confident than I do at this point in my life.

Ageing: love it or hate it?

I think having been in the public eye makes ageing harder –there’s always a record of images or videos of younger days. I look back and think I took so much for granted. I’ve always been active but now I believe in regular Pilates over and above the fitness side; it really helps with shape. I also take care of my skin and hair properly now and I’ve also had the broken veins on my legs (thanks pregnancy!) treated at Face & Body clinic in Edinburgh. I really value expert input and owner Victoria Dobbie is now my go-to skin mentor.

Do you think nutrition and confidence are linked?

I don't think there's a confidence boosting way of eating but if you are confident, you are able to ask for what you want, or what you feel your body needs. Conversely, I do see a lot of confidence issues stemming from unresolved childhood issues that shows itself around eating habits.

Family motto?

Be yourself. Enjoy doing whatever you want to express yourself. I’ve followed my passion and interests and enjoyed a career from it. I didn’t really consider the opinions of others too much and although I’m a pretty reserved person, I always followed my gut.
