My Style, My Way: Robert Armstrong
Robert Armstrong is head of business at Loake Edinburgh – a store responsible for kitting out the capital's most dapper gents with traditionally crafted brogues.
How long have you worked in fashion?
I’ve been involved in fashion, textiles and footwear for over 30 years. I originally worked as an industrial knitwear designer and teacher in Scotland. Then worked in international sales and marketing, primarily in the luxury fashion and footwear sector.
When did you first become interested in fashion?
As a kid growing up in the early ‘70s I was into brands such as Ben Sherman, Levis and Adidas. It was all about following the streetwear of the time and trying to fit in with the grown up kids!
How would you describe your style?
I think of myself as retro, I’ve always loved original, well-made, timeless clothing and footwear. I have many old trusty faithfuls that I can tweak to meet the fashion mood of today.
Brogues – how do you wear yours?
I love to wear them with clean, turned up denim and colourful socks from Corgi Hosiery.
Top tip for keeping your brogues in tip top condition?
One day on, one day off, and always use Loake cedar wood shoe trees to keep them in shape. Follow these steps and they’ll last for decades.
What sets Edinburgh gentlemen apart?
Our attention to traditional tailoring. It fits with our spaces, our architecture and our weather.
What trends should we be looking out for this summer?
Deck chair stripes, stone colours, colourful suede loafers and boots.
Whose style do you most admire?
I like those that can mix things in an individual and interesting way with a touch of fun. My dear mother Ruby once told me, ‘Fine feathers make fine birds’ so anyone well-dressed gets the big thumbs up from me.
