My style: Sarah Murray
The owner of Edinburgh boutique Jane Davidson on style with comfort and stepping into her mum's very fashionable shoes
My earliest memory... As a little girl, I used to go to fashion shows and buying appointments with my mum Jane who originally opened Jane Davidson in 1969. In those days, you would mark the pieces you liked with coloured plastic rings and I remember sitting in the showroom playing with them.
Taking on the family mantle... I got involved with the business 20 years ago when I moved home from abroad and stepped in to help when Mum had some staffing issues. Then I got the bug and took over a few years later.
Finding inspiration in the everyday... I read fashion magazines and always look at Instagram. Often the best inspiration comes from the streets.
My signature style... It’s a pared down look based on style with comfort and a slightly masculine edge. Definitely not girly!
Wardrobe must-haves... A denim jacket, biker jacket, wide leg trouser, maxi skirt, white shirt and the perfect black t-shirt. For everyday wear, I can’t see past a good Smythe jacket and some Veronica Beard separates.
The shoes I live in... White leather trainers. They go with everything and dress down even the most formal of looks.
My secret address book... Charlie Miller always look after my hair. I love the Method for beauty products and candles. And for cool home accessories, I head to Pad Lifestyle.
Favourite designers... Dries van Noten and Roland Mouret are my go-to favourites and my new obsession is Chinese designer Huishan Zhang.
Style icons... Audrey Hepburn, Caroline de Maigret, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, Tilda Swinton, and Olivia Palermo to name a few. But most importantly, my mum, Jane, who has inspired not only my fashion sense but my sense of independence. Growing up, I watched her build a successful business from scratch and I am so lucky to be able to continue that legacy.
