Edinburgh warms to Beijing's charm offensive in celebration of cultural collaboration
A major tourism body responsible for promoting Beijing as an iconic global and cultural destination has selected Edinburgh as the UK’s key cultural centre and tourist destination in an effort to strengthen alliances between the two historic cities.
In case you missed it, the Beijing Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau hosted ‘Charming Beijing’ in Edinburgh’s Festival Square on 25th June, 2019 to promote the Chinese capital's culture, history and scenic sights.
As well as featuring a traditional and vibrant Dragon Dance display, operatic costumes from the world-famous Beijing Opera, and the opportunity to taste traditional Chinese cuisine, the exhibition also included an impressive photographic showcase depicting the multifaceted appeal of the city; ancient capital Beijing, fashionable Beijing, modern Beijing, cultural Beijing and Beijing Forbidden City.
According to the record, Britain is one of the most important overseas markets for
Beijing, attracting between 180,000 and 200,000 visitors annually.
Direct flights from Edinburgh to Beijing are currently “under negotiation” as China’s Hainan Airlines considers whether to continue its service beyond October 2019.
