New restaurants to check out this month
From new openings and new looks to tapas and '2-for-1' Tuesdays, these are the places that have got our mouths watering this month
The new look Browns in Edinburgh is open again and it’s looking good after an extensive makeover. As well as the luxe interiors, they also have a new seasonal menu with starters such as pan-seared scallops, a vegan summer beet and orange salad and hearty classics like steak and Guinness pie.
For a more international repertoire of small and large dishes New York Style, keep an eye out for Noto which opens in the former Iris restaurant on Thistle Street later this month. It’s the latest venture from Stuart Ralston - chef patron of Edinburgh’s popular Aizle restaurant - and it’s set to be a good one with all-day à la carte dining Wednesday to Sundays.
For something lighter and frothier, there’s Fizz which has opened in the old Sygn bar premises in the West End offering Champagne, cocktails and French patisserie. Or head down to the waterfront where you’ll find new neighbourhood bar and kitchen Basils in the former Annfield pub in Newhaven. Named for Scottish brutalist architect Sir Basil Spence, expect edgy interiors and a hearty gastropub menu.
For something completely different, check out The Garden Hatch on the outskirts of the city. Hidden away at the back of Dobbies Garden Centre Edinburgh, it’s a cool restaurant with a street food van serving delicious hot tacos, nachos and quesadillas. Tommy’s Banglacafe is another new opening offering delicious street food on South Charlotte Street. Or check out the new bigger and better Bodega on Albert Place at the top of Leith Walk. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, the Edinburgh taqueria serves fresh Mexican, Asian and American-inspired flavours from around the world, wrapped in an authentic corn tortilla. It’s also BYO wine.
Also on the Walk, Edinburgh’s second branch of popular tapas and mezze joint La Casa has opened in the former Serrano & Manchego. Those in Glasgow can get a cheesy fix at NYC Express, a new macaroni cheese restaurant and takeaway on Great Western Road offering deliciously Instagrammable food. For pancakes galore, you’ll also now find a second Stack & Still at Silverburn. The new venue inside the Winter Garden offers 2 for 1 stacks on Tuesdays, great tasting bottomless coffee and kids-eat-free offers.
Over in the east end of town, look out for the yellow door of The Gate, a modern Scottish neighbourhood bar now open for business at 251 Gallowgate, opposite Barrowland Ballroom.
