Surfing

There's no time like the present to learn how to surf

5 Mins

Being a bit of an adrenaline junkie on water or at the beach is the way forward at this time of year.

There’s no time like the present to learn how to ride the waves and while you may not be the next Kelly Slater in the making, Coast to Coast surf school in East Lothian runs daily surf lessons for beginners to help them learn how to catch their first wave, for surfers who want to build their skills and even junior holiday courses for the school holidays–hurrah!

There's no time like the present to learn how to ride the waves and you'll catch your first at surf school

Not much further along the road is Foxlake Adventures, where you can try your hand at wakeboarding. An overhead cable pulls you over the lake, with a feel similar to surfing/ water skiing, and it’s all fairly fail-safe, good fun. If you’re not standing after your first session, it comes with a money back guarantee.

Port Edgar Watersports

Stand Up Paddleboarding (you stand on a board and paddle) takes paddle sports to the next level and it’s one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Coast to Coast offers classes, as does Port Edgar Watersports in South Queensfeery, where the harbour is the ideal sheltered spot to get to grips with the sport before venturing down rivers and along lochs. The activity centre even offers taster sessions if you just want to give it a go and decide if it’s for you during the two-hour trial. Next one is on 01 July and can be booked here.

Blown Away Land Yachting

Or, if surfing appeals to you but dry land is more your thing, Blown Away is an outdoor experience company based on West Sands in St Andrews. Set up by twin brothers, Guy and Jamie McKenzie, this is the home of land yachting. Basically, land yachting consists of a three-wheeled buggy with a sail which is propelled along the beach by the wind (the perfect green activity). Over the last couple of years, the fleet has grown in size; with the addition of "twins" they can take out children sitting alongside an adult. It’s a thrilling activity and most people are whizzing along the beach racing their friends within 15 minutes.
